News Flash from North Midd’s Cricket Committee - 30 July 2006

Frank Shepherd completed the sale of his Lease of the Ground and business to a Consortium of sports-minded professional and business people on Friday.
The new Leaseholders invited our Cricket Committee to a meeting on Friday evening to introduce themselves and outline their business plan and proposals for the Ground and to discuss future liaison.

Key Points

The Consortium told us that they very much want cricket to continue and prosper at North Midd. As noted below they have many exciting ideas to improve our facilities. They are looking to us to support those ideas and make it all happen and when it has enjoy using a greatly improved club.

Our main point of contact for the future will be Steve Young who is MD of the Consortium and a Surveyor with many years experience of coaching and managing colts’ and adults’ sports teams. He has a UEFA Coaching award and has run youth teams for and has close connections with clubs including Chelsea FC. Steve will be around the Ground on most days. Chris who is the Ground Superintendent will also be there daily.

Plans for the Ground itself include

The Pavilion will be altered and extended. The current entrance will remain but will access a reception desk and stairs to the upper floor. The area to the right of the entrance (currently changing rooms, shower etc.) will become a gym with its own showers and changing facility.

he bar and nursery to the left of the entrance will become a bar (serving drinks and bar meals all day) and sit down restaurant for members. The intention is to link this to the veranda space by replacing the front wall with a retractible glass wall.

Upstairs the plan is to extend the current function area by building over the bar/nursery area. The extended area will be capable of being split into two halves and will be serviced by its own toilets. The main kitchen will also be upstairs with a dumb waiter servicing the bar below.

The cricket changing and showers will be rehoused in an extended and refurbished Bowls Pavilion. There will be four changing rooms and storage space for cricket kit etc.

The nursery will be rehoused in the area of the current tractor shed (the one with ‘teas’ painted on it – opposite the Pavilion). Apparently it will be feasible to do this without material encroachment into the 3rd XI/Colts’ pitch.

The tennis/bowling area at the ‘top’ of the Ground will be ‘astroturfed’ to provide one full sized football pitch in the middle and two mini pitches at either end – one of which will be multi activity. The current nets will be relaid and extended – the possibility of having indoor nets is being considered.

Subject to satisfactory drainage, the outfield will be used for mini soccer when not in cricket use.

The condition of the cricket squares is to be analysed by experts and a plan for improvement works implemented during the close Season. Andy Saunders (aka ‘the Rev’ or ‘ the man who does the bacon butties’) will be full time groundsman.

The vehicle access from Park Road will be widened to provide improved sight lines and two lanes.

The Consortium are meeting with Haringay planners next week to discuss their proposals after which a planning application will be submitted. Timing of the redevelopment programme will ultimately depend on progress of that application.

Another meeting has been scheduled between the Cricket Committee and the Consortium for an update in the second half of August. In the meantime the Committee has an open line of communication with Steve so please channel any concerns to a Committee member – contact details are in the Fixture Book.
